The joint virtual meeting between the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS) and the Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation of Finland, about the Afghanistan developments, was held on Tuesday, November 30, 2021.

The meeting was held by  speeches from  Mr.Majid Ghafelehbashi, Research Deputy for IPIS; Hossein Ebrahimkhani, Bahman Agharazi, and Saeed Ghaderi, Senior Experts of IPIS, on one side, And, Mr.Janne Taalas, Director of the Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, and Oskari Eronen, President of Asia program at the said foundation. The meeting was held in the form a panel,” Regional Issues: with Focus on Latest Developments of Afghanistan “.During the meeting the participants exchanged their opinions.

Here are the major topics touched upon at the meeting:

  • Although after three months we are witnessing restoring relative security to Afghanistan, the major problems ahead of the country include: 1) migration crisis;2) Afghanistan’s economic mayhem; 3) narcotic problem;4) creation of a comprehensive government with participation of all ethnic and religious groups.
  • The Afghanistan issue is a security one for the European countries, from the point of view of migration and terrorism.
  • The European, regional and mostly countries neighboring Afghanistan are most influenced by spillover of Afghanistan’s developments and problems. Therefore, the Afghanistan case demands fast and coordinated cooperation and humanitarian help of international society, namely the regional and European countries, the UN and its affiliated institutes as a vital issue.
