The joint virtual session between the Institute for Political and International Studies(IPIS) and the Norwegian Center for Conflict Resolution (NOREF) was held on Wednesday  ,  December 23 , 2020. The speakers of the session were Dr.Mohammad KazemSajjadpour, Deputy Minister of MOFA & President of IPIS; Seyedmohammadtaghi Hosseini, Senior Expert at the Studies Center; Sabah Zangeneh, Former Iranian Ambassador to the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC); Hassan Ahmadian, Professor of International Relations at University of Tehran; Dag Nylander, President of the NOREF; and Marat Heian-Engdal.

Several subjects were touched upon at the session including examining the Norwegian approach as a nonpermanent member of the UNSC in 2021, the capabilities and limits of the UN security council in resolving the conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) as well as the security developments landscape in the region.

The most important topics broached at the session are as follows:

One of the goals of Norway in joining the security council as a nonpermanent member is to help in peaceful resolution of the world’s conflicts and clashes, though, the current international developments show that peaceful settlement of these conflicts is not an easy task.

Although there have been a range of efforts to reform the security council, during recent years, the security council has been seriously challenged due to the US unilaterism and illegal demands, which is quite an unprecedented phenomenon.

Multilaterism has been gravely threatened; for this, it is necessary that multilaterism be revived in a concerted effort and joint solutions be found for resolution of world and regional problems. The continuation of the current situation has caused the UNSC  to be faced with serious challenges in carrying out its main responsibility in preserving the international peace and security.

There are crises that threaten the regional and international peace and security , for fair and just settlement of which, the UN security council need take serious actions. The deadly war in Yemen has destroyed the country. The Palestinian problem along with its occupation by Israel is another threat to the region. Therefore, there must be taken immediate action to end the long-lasting misery and sufferings of the people.
